Relations with Slovakia
Strong and Enduring Relations Between the Sovereign Order of Malta and the Slovak Republic
The Sovereign Order of Malta and the Slovak Republic enjoy long-standing, constructive, and mutually respectful diplomatic relations, built on shared humanitarian values and a common commitment to preserving human dignity. Since the establishment of formal diplomatic ties, the Order has been a valuable partner in promoting charitable work, medical support, and social services throughout Slovakia.
Since 6 September 2016, when H.S.H. Dr. Alfred Prinz von Schönburg-Hartenstein presented his credentials to President Andrej Kiska, the Order’s Embassy in Bratislava has actively strengthened cooperation with Slovak institutions. The Order works in close coordination with governmental and non-governmental organizations to support vulnerable communities, provide disaster relief, and assist the elderly, disabled, and socially excluded individuals. The presence of the Embassy and its effective diplomacy have deepened bilateral engagement in areas of healthcare, social inclusion, and humanitarian outreach.
The Order of Malta’s Slovak relief corps, in collaboration with Malteser International, contributes to both national and international missions. In recent years, the Order has supported emergency efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic, helped Ukrainian refugees, and provided care services during natural disasters.
The partnership between the Sovereign Order of Malta and the Slovak Republic stands as a model of humanitarian diplomacy. Rooted in shared values and trust, their cooperation reflects the mission of the Order to be “at the service of the poor and the sick” and the Slovak Republic’s commitment to social solidarity and international engagement. This enduring relationship continues to evolve with relevance and impact.
